Port Charles Uncovered: America’s Longest-Running Scripted Drama on ABC

Premiering on April 1, 1963, ABC’s General Hospital holds the distinction of being the longest-running American soap opera currently in production and a record-holder for Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series. Set in the upstate harbor city of Port Charles, New York, GH blends life-and-death medical crises on the tenth floor of the hospital with waterfront syndicate intrigue, WSB espionage, and old-money Quartermaine family warfare.

What separates Port Charles from every other fictional town on television is the high-wire balance between law enforcement and organized crime. For decades, kingpin Sonny Corinthos and his steadfast enforcer Jason Morgan have defended their shipping piers against rival syndicates and federal task forces while navigating tempestuous personal ties with Carly Spencer, Ava Jerome, Nina Reeves, and Dante Falconeri.

The Quartermaine Estate, The Metro Court & General Hospital’s Medical Core

Over at the sprawling Quartermaine mansion, matriarchal powerhouse Tracy Quartermaine keeps sharp watch over ELQ International alongside Ned, Brook Lynn, Michael Corinthos, Drew Cain, and Willow Tait—where custody battles and voting proxies regularly turn family dinners into verbal battlegrounds. At the hospital itself, Chief of Staff Portia Robinson, Elizabeth Webber, Lucas Jones, and Isaiah Gannon anchor the medical stories that gave the series its name.

Add in the investigative grit of Police Commissioner Anna Devane, Laura Collins, Curtis Ashford, Alexis Davis, and legal shark Ric Lansing, and every public gathering at the Metro Court Restaurant or Bobbie’s Diner carries the potential for an explosive public reckoning.
